Emmett & Velma Lawson Estate, Harold, Kentucky

CUNDIFF DESIGN ASSOCIATES

A combination of thoughtful planning, design and environmental awareness make this unique dwelling a compliment to the art of residential design. From structural considerations to water distillation, very few, if any, projects have been so carefully conceived and so carefully constructed.

As an architect, I rarely have an opportunity to participate in a project which is not only unique, but has the full attention and understanding required of an owner. The Emmett Lawson Estate was one of those rare opportunities.

The planning and design process of the Lawson property incorporated a blending of aesthetics and living environments with concise mechanical, electrical and plumbing requirements. Careful consideration was given to every detail. The organization of interior spaces created individual living and entertainment zones which allowed for privacy while, at the same time, permitted interaction when desired. Acoustical insu- lation further enhanced privacy where needed. From the upper floor sitting and lounge area to the main floor family area to the lower floor recreation area, the com- fort and feeling of inclusiveness along with privacy is apparent. This was accom- plished without sacrificing spaciousness and circulation. From the four-story center core with skylights to the spacious pool area, the livability of the residence is unequaled.

Specific design requirements for the unique custom European kitchen would please the most demanding gourmet while still allowing participation and communication in family functions. A secondary kitchen/bar allows for easy service to the lower recreation floor and thoughtfully landscaped lawn area. Custom casework abounds with both craftsmanship and purpose. From the main floor family area to the library/office to the kitchen to the recreation bar/kitchen to the individualized bath- rooms, materials and functions were carefully considered. For optimum aesthetics, even the zoned hydronic heating was integrated into lined casework toe spaces. where required. Throughout the residence. function and comfort, as well as enter- tainment and storage provisions were carefully addressed in the design of the cus- tom-built cabinetry. The master suite even includes a unique mirrored and floating glass shelf dresser with built-in entertainment center.

From the zoned lighting system to the computer stress-tested trusses. to the transi- tion of teak floors to carpet areas, no detail, structural, finish or functional considera- tion was left unnoticed by Mr. Lawson.

In summary, few residences are constructed to the demanding standards one found in this home and grounds. The materials and systems installed are typically found only in the most demanding commercial projects. It is unfortunate that most individ- uals will never see the quality of construction, systems, and materials covered by earth, paving, walls. and floors.

It was my pleasure to be associated with the planning and design of this unique estate.

The photo below is a view from the study door. The spiral staircase leads to the secluded music room, which also serves as the control room for all electronic operations of the estate. The three- quarter-inch teak floors, teak stair railings and stairs bring the dimensions of elegance and durability to the overall design plans. The outside view is of the private garden shared with the master bedroom suite.
