TOMAHAWK — An off the cuff remark during a conversation between county music legend Hylo Brown and Martin County's own entertainer Gene Sisco was the inspiration
for a new song, the title cut of Sisco's new album: Just a State of Mind. "Hylo and I were talking on the phone and he was feeling a little under the
weather," Sisco said Thursday. "He was talking about the little ills and aches associated with old age, and I made the comment that old age was
simply a state of mind. He thought about it, said it sounded like a song and we put our heads together and came up with a new song." Sisco, a former news journalist and Mountain Citizen
columnist, is well known in country music circles. As host of "Raw Country," a half-hour radio show on WSAC "on the river in Louisa" (92.3 FM), he spotlights local talent each Monday
morning at 11 a.m. "I've had Annalyse McCoy, Gretta Ward, Roger Goble and others on my show," he said. "I believe we have some of the best musicians and singers in the country right
around here. It really isn't any wonder why U.S. Route 23 is called the country music highway. There are still a lot of good countrymusic
entertainers here." The Tomahawk native credits a new sound for his latest album, saying it is
mixture between traditional country and bluegrass. "I believe folks will appreciate it," he noted. "I am honored to have written one of these songs with Hylo. I've known him for about 45 years,
and although we're good friends, I'm also one his biggest fans. He is truly one of the finest guys I've ever known."
